Skip Hire or Man and Van? Making the Right Choice
When you need waste removed from your Edinburgh property, you have two main options: hiring a skip or using a man-and-van rubbish removal service. Each has distinct advantages depending on your project size, timeline, and budget. Here's how to decide which is right for you.
When to choose skip hire
Ongoing projects: If your renovation, clearance, or build will take several days or weeks, a skip gives you a central place to collect waste as you go. You don't need to coordinate collection times.
Heavy waste: Skips are the only practical option for soil, rubble, concrete, and bricks. Man-and-van services typically charge by volume, making heavy materials prohibitively expensive.
Cost for larger jobs: For projects generating more than a few van loads, skip hire is usually cheaper. A 6-yard skip holds approximately 50–60 bin bags — equivalent to 3–4 large van trips.
Permits arranged: We handle Edinburgh Council road permits for you, so even if you don't have off-road space, a skip can still work.
When to choose man and van
Single bulky items: If you just need a sofa, mattress, or old appliance removed, a man-and-van service is faster and cheaper than a full skip.
No space for a skip: If you live in a tenement flat on Leith Walk or George Street with no driveway and no permit, a van collection from your close may be the only option.
Immediate removal: A van can collect today. A skip sits for 1–2 weeks, which may not suit every situation.
The Enviroworx difference
We offer both skip hire and a dedicated Wait and Load service — giving you the flexibility of a van collection with the capacity of a skip. Our driver arrives, waits up to 30 minutes while you load, and takes the skip away immediately. No permit needed, no overnight obstruction.
